This thing sucks…until it doesn’t and I can’t put it down.

Welcome to our Dynavap UniDyn review!

Ok, forgive me for the click baity title, but it’s the honest truth. The dynavap unidyn sucks to use, but it’s become the ONLY dry herb vape I reach for at night. Let me explain (and please stay with me because I promise this review is going somewhere 🙂).

Dynavap Unidyn Review

Why Review the Dynavap Unidyn?

As someone building their repertoire of reviews, I realized I needed to review an analog device soon because that’s a massive part of this community. So, I saved up some cash here and there and purchased the Dynavap Unidyn.

You can ask my wife, I was so excited to try this thing out. So many people absolutely LOVE their dynavaps and I was sure that I would as well. I was legitimately standing at the door waiting for the mail to arrive almost all day, that’s how excited it was!

Unboxing

Once the unidyn arrived, I was so excited to open it and get started with it. The dynavap unidyn came in a small, yet well branded box. Opening it was easy and very straightforward.

As a rule, I ALWAYS read the manual of every device I review and use for a variety of reasons, but number one is that I don’t want my first impression to be ruined by my lack of knowledge of the product. So, I looked in the packaging and…no manual. But there is a QR code which is fine by me, I like not wasting paper.

Unfortunately, the QR code sends you to more of a general “how to” section for all dynavaps. This is fine, but you have to hunt for your specific device and use case. Not ideal in my opinion, but I worked with it. I watched all the videos and followed all the steps necessary, including the tutorials on how to properly heat the dynavap unidyn.

First “sucky” use

After thorough cleaning and watching all the proper tutorials I was excited for my first use! Now the Unidyn is unique in that they call it a “ball vape”…that’s a misnomer in my opinion, but the overall idea is similar. There are some metal balls in the captive cap that are there to heat up and hold heat steady throughout your session.

The tutorials ALL say “heat until you hear the click, then you’re ready to enjoy”. So I grabbed my butane torch, aimed for the spot they tell you to heat and I got to work. I kept the flame on the area I was supposed to, while rotating the Unidyn as instructed on the video. Ten seconds pass and no click. Twenty seconds pass and no click. 30 seconds pass and no click and I say to myself “maybe this one takes longer because it has all that extra thermal mass in the tip”, so I continue. Eventually I said “yolo” and took my first draw…pure smoke. I combusted. Now, the smoke was pretty decent if I’m being honest, but I bought a dry herb vaporizer.

I chalked this first use up to user error and was ready to try again until I realized…the cap is SCREAMING HOT and I can’t touch it until it cools wayyyy down. So I waited about 5-8 minutes and finally it was cool enough for me to take the ash out of the bowl and start a new one.

I started heating my second bowl and within SECONDS I heard and felt a nice, loud, click! I took my first draw and…nothing. No vapor whatsoever. So, I waited for it to click again before I re-heated it and tried a third time. I put flame to the area outlined on the cap and rotated it just like before and no click…after about 30 seconds of heat, I decided to take a draw and…SMOKE AGAIN!

Sorely disappointed, I gave up and grabbed my Veazy and called it a night. But the next day, I was determined to get a good experience out of it…and that’s when everything changed.

My Second “MAGICAL” use

So it’s day 2 with the Dynavap Unidyn and I decided that I wasn’t going to pay attention to this fickle click. I wanted to just simply feel it out and abuse or ignore the click all together. So I grabbed a different torch (pictured below), armed with vibes and intuition only, I started to heat it up. Once I felt like it was sufficiently heated I took a draw and… OH. MY. GOD.

I was sitting next to my wife while we were watching our nightly tv shows and I said “oooooh, I get it now”. The flavor and the vapor was EXCELLENT. Better than any of my battery powered vaporizers that I’ve tested so far. The effects were WAY stronger than my battery powered vaporizers and with about a third less material in my opinion.

Once I realized that the click on the cap is completely unreliable, and I just started feeling out my own personal timing, the thing came alive! It is quite the experience.

Things I love about the Dynavap Unidyn

Ok, I’ve given you my massive gripes now let me talk about what I absolutely love about this thing.

  1. It’s lightweight and very portable
  2. It’s easy to clean (probably one of the easiest so far)
  3. The vapor and flavor is just so, so, good.
  4. I like the “digger outer” on the cap.
  5. The effects are amazing considering how little herb you’re using. I suspect this is due to quick and efficient extraction. You can basically use this thing as a one hitter quitter if you have the lung capacity.
  6. Did I mention how good the effects were? Because damn.

Things I don’t love about the Unidyn

  1. No curated videos when using the QR code. Look, I’m all for not providing a manual and saving the paper…I support that, but when you use a QR code like that, I don’t want to have to sit through a general discussion of how to use all of the products…especially when the one I’m using has so many quirks.
  2. Why have a click if it doesn’t give you accurate information? Granted, I may have some sort of defective unit but I can’t know that until I use another dynavap device. From my experience with this particular Unidyn, the click doesn’t tell me ANYTHING.
  3. It’s wayyyy too easy to combust this thing.
  4. The vapor can be on the warm side so those who are very sensitive to that sort of thing may need to think about that before you buy.
  5. Dynavap Vaporizers are billed as “simple” and my experience was anything BUT simple. I had to dial in a technique void of any real feedback from the device itself. There is a very real learning curve and the Unidyn will punish you until you get it figured out.
  6. You use a solid amount of butane trying to get this thing in the right temperature and it would really benefit from an induction heater…but that’s another purchase and another battery to manage.

My final thoughts

I don’t play golf…I’ve never been interested in golf (no hate towards golf, it’s just not my thing), but about a year ago my friend took me to top golf for the first time. We did what everyone does at top golf; eat, drink too much, and hit golf balls very poorly. But there was this moment where everything aligned perfectly for me and I felt what it feels like to hit a golf ball perfectly straight and really, really far. It was a moment where I said to myself “I get it now…I understand why people obsess over golf”. That was my experience with the Dynavap Unidyn. It’s like hitting hooks and slices all day until you suddenly hit a piss missile straight down the fairway and you chase that dragon for the rest of your life!

Ok…maybe that’s a bit melodramatic, but the point stands that the Unidyn is a bit unwieldy but rewards your hard work and effort with an absolutely exquisite experience with regards to dry herb vaping. If you’re willing to fail a little and put in a little bit of effort, you get rewarded with some top tier extraction.

Who’s this for?

Anyone who wants a really, really great experience who isn’t afraid to combust a little on their way to excellent vapor!

Who’s this not for?

People who just want something that just works out of the box or those who are very sensitive to the temperature of their vapor.
